Maintaining a car can be a hassle. However, since everything has a “How To” now in Youtube, as long as you have a few simple tools on hand you may be able to do a lot more to fix your car than you think. You can save a few hundred bucks and a trip to the car repair shop. Here are 5 common tools to help you with basic repair:
  1. Jack and Jack Stands A jack is useful when you need to repair something underneath your car, it will lift your car up leaving you space to do so. It can also lift your car high enough for you to change tires. Make sure your car won’t roll on the ground by using the parking brake, placing a block of wood to block the wheels, or by working on a level surface. Ask for help if you’re unsure on how to use a jack.
  2. A Full Screwdriver Set A screwdriver should be common in every household, but they come in different sizes and tip options. If a screwdriver is not the right size and type for the screw used, it is likely that the screw will be damaged.
  3. A Socket Set A socket set is a mechanic’s best friend.  It would help them maneuver the nuts and bolts easier. A complete socket set should be able to have the different sizes and drives to help you do your repair.
  4. A Set of Wrenches There are 2 sets of wrenches that most people get: the metric set and the standard set. The metric set will help you with mostly anything for basic repair. The standard set will cover up for what the metric set cannot so it’s better to keep them around also.
  5. Code Reader A code reader is a tool you can use to diagnose your car. It will report a trouble code that corresponds to a specific fault. You can easily look for the meaning of the codes on the internet. This will give you an idea on what’s wrong with the car. However, a single trouble code may have multiple causes, and you might need to trace the root of the problem. Unless you have a fair knowledge about how an engine works, it is advisable to consult an expert about it.

These tools come in handy, but it won’t always fix your car. Sometimes you would need new components or spare parts that might cost you a lot of money. In worse cases, you would have to pay a car technician to do the fixing. A car insurance will help you cover these costs, so you can be at ease when something is wrong with your car.

Thank you for sharing such an useful and informative article. We have to maintain our car at a regular interval in order to run smoothly for a long period. And the tools you have provided above are very useful in repairing basic car problems. However, we should not try to fix any major problems as it may cost us more later and should take our vehicle to a trusted and certified repairing center.

Every vehicle owner wants to save money, and if I am not wrong, I think DIY auto repair is absolutely a great way to reduce the car maintenance cost. By doing car maintenance on your own, you can save time and become an expert to handle the minor car breakdowns. However, apart from basic technical skills, you must have the recommended tools to perform the necessary fixes. Here, the author recommended 5 auto repair tools. I would like to tell that excluding the above tools, you must keep pliers set, front-end service set, rubber mallet, breaker bar, floor jack, oil drain pan, latex gloves, jumper box, digital multi-meter, to make the necessary repairs by yourself.

The article provides useful information about the tools which could be very helpful in repairing a car at home. In my point of view, basic maintenance of the car should be done at home and any types of minor damage could also be repaired at home in order to save certain amount of money. However, one should not try to repair any types of major damage. Because it could cost much more later. However, above tools are really useful.
